Winter Slow-Cooked Barbeque Brisket Pitas

Winter Slow-Cooked Barbeque Brisket Pitas

This has got to be on your list of comfort foods for winter! Not only is it easy to cook and prepare, but it is tasty and will certainly warm you up on a cold winter’s day. Find the recipe and method here. This recipe is designed to make large quantities that can either be frozen or can be enjoyed when you have people over.

What you’ll need:
• 5kg’s beef brisket
• ½ cup water
• 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
• 3 Tablespoons vinegar
• 3 cups of your favourite barbecue sauce
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin or chili powder
• 12-14 Anat pitas
• Sliced gherkins
• Sliced red onion

What you need to do:
Step 1
If you have a slow cooker, this will be perfect! Start by trimming the fat from your brisket and if you need to, cut your brisket to fit into your slow cooker or a large pot. Add the water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and the cumin and/or chili powder. Cover this and allow it to cook on a low-heat setting for around 10-12 hours or a high-heat setting for 4-5 hours.

Step 2
About an hour before you want to serve your pitas, remove your meat from your pot or slow cooker. You can discard the cooking liquid. Using forks to pull, shred your meat and return or add it to a pot. Stir in your barbeque sauce and then cover and cook on a high heat for 30 to 45 minutes or until heated through.

Step 3
While your meat is cooking with the barbeque sauce, slice your Anat pitas open and ready your sliced gherkins and red onions. Once your meat is ready you can serve this in your pitas with your pickles and onions. For an extra decadent, comforting pita we would recommend adding some Danish feta to your pita too. This will go soft and creamy when mixed in with the warm meat. Just delicious!
